Course Description
Mathematical description and modelling of dynamic systems. Representation of systems in state space. Calculation of responses in time and frequency domains. Transfer functions and dynamical diagrams. Stability of dynamical systems. Characteristics of transient response of systems. Characteristics of control systems. Basic control devices. The root locus method for the analysis and design of control systems. Frequency response. Design in the frequency domain. Applied topics using appropriate software.
Purpose of the course
On successful completion of the course the student will be able to
- Recognize the importance of basic concepts of automatic control systems, such as feedback, gain, error, etc.
- Describes systems using mathematical models and will decide on their dynamic behaviour and steady state behaviour.
- Knows the characteristic sizes of automatic control systems and will be able to use these to compare and select the appropriate one for a particular task.
- Draw conclusions about the behaviour and stability of systems he/she is designing or studying.
- Design controllers and robust systems with applications in industry and everyday life.
- Understand the usefulness of all of the above in the design and implementation of automatic control systems.
- Has gained practical experience in the use of control systems, both in a simulation environment and in the laboratory.
- Can collaborate with fellow students in the laboratory to solve simple practical problems.
