Course Description

The course is an introduction to design thinking and the practices followed by product designers (physical consumer products and IT objects/professional equipment) to design products that meet the lifestyle and needs of consumers/users. The aim of the course is to familiarize the student with the design thinking and practices followed by product designers so that he/she can participate in product design and development projects, either representing the manufacturer as a manager or engineer, or gradually taking on a larger and distinct role.
The course basically studies the iterative design cycle, which includes (iteratively) understanding the product’s use environment and the needs of the product. These activities are taught through practical, hand-on design exercises. The outcome-objective of the course is to familiarize the student with the practice of product design and development. Purpose of the course

  • Understanding of the product design process, from the idea for a product to its production.
  • Familiarity with the way product designers work (design thinking).
  • Understanding the role of contributors and stakeholders other than the main designers of a product, whether they are suppliers, distributors, sellers, users, professionals who will manage intellectual property issues, legislation, repairs and ultimately product withdrawal/recycling.
  • Developing creativity and creative confidence.
