Course Description

The objective of the course is to introduce students to the concepts of excitation, rotating magnetic field, synchronous velocity, slip, and familiarization with equivalent electrical machine circuits, power flow diagrams, efficiency, generator output characteristics (voltage-load current) and motor output characteristics (torque-speed), construction characteristics of electrical machines.

Principles of operation of Electric Machines, construction elements, types and specifications. Permanent operating condition. Transformers, specifications, equivalent circuit..

Direct Current (DC) Electrical Machines (D.C), types of excitation, generators – motors, equivalent circuit, load characteristics, power flow diagram, efficiency, voltage and speed regulation.

Alternating Current (A.C.) Electrical Machines, Rotating Magnetic Field.

Modern (generators – motors), equivalent circuit, vector diagram, parallelism of modern generators, effect of excitation and load, synchronous capacitor.

Asynchronous machines, three-phase induction motor, slip concept, equivalent circuit, power flow diagram, torque-speed characteristic, speed regulation, starting devices.


Purpose of the course

By the end of the semester students should be able to:

  • Solve exercises for the calculation of the steady state of
    electric machines (DC, synchronous and asynchronous) generators or motors. The calculation concerns characteristic operating or nominal quantities such as speed, power, power, efficiency, developing torque, load torque, line current, output voltage and voltage variation for generators, power factor, losses.
  • Identify types of electrical machines, their characteristic components and corresponding equivalent electrical circuits.
  • Apply mathematical modelling of electrical machines to steady state operation.
